1981 until 1997 - How everything got started
In 1981 at the pub "Bären" in Schramberg the idea of a bagpiping band was born. Back than nobody could know what finally would become of that, since not all ideas born out of a mood are really coming true. Soon the first instruments were ordered at the distributor that also delivers to the royal family.
The now emerging band consisted of eight drummers, but only two future pipers. First musical help was given to us by a captain of a canadian pipeband, which was stationed in Lahr. The decision for the suiting dresses was very long-drawn-out. Finally we decided for the used equipment of the scottish Sutherland Highlanders (back then already 25 years old), which still cost 30.000 DM. Our thanks still goes to all the founders that with their idealism and financial effort have made the purchase possible.
The engines of the beginning years and still today are active members. They are the chief of board Heinz Schell and the ex-chief of board and ex-Pipe Major Michael Herrmann. The achievements would'nt have been possible without their untireing effort.

A picture from the first years of the band.

The musical development in the beginning
At first we were musically totally on our own. We learned the songs only through the melodie and tried to copy scottish bands of sound carriers. The characeristic scottish skills with its complicated gracenotes and doublings were just skipped due to the fact that we didn't know better. With increasing routine our demands also increased. From head to toe we were furnished with the finest original scottish equipment and now we wanted to get the last finish on the music. For that reason we have worked increasingly with the Tutor of the College of Piping, Glasgow, which was translated internally. This College is the worldwide first adress when it comes to scottish bagpiping and still is today the basis for the education of beginning pipers worldwide, even with us.
In 1982, after all the problems of the beginning, we already had our first but not less recognized appearances. Through that we earned our first money. Regarding to that the "Schramberger Zeitung" (Newspaper of Schramberg) wrote on the 22nd of January 1982 as follows. "Hauch des Ungewöhnlichen pfeift durch Schramberg: Dudelsackband beschreitet neue musikalische Pfade". (The breath of the unusual whistles through Schramberg: bagpiping band follows a new course)
In the meantime the practice at the pub "Bären" had to be given up since it was not suitable during wintertime due to not enough heating. The following practice pub, the Sonnensaal in Mariazell, had to be left behind after a while for the same reason. Finally the community of Hardt supplied us with a room at the groundschool at which we are still meeting for practice.
Years of organization and learning followed. The band grew as the routined players educated the following beginners. The goal was a body of 16 active players. But you can hardly expect an educated bagpiper to join a club. It was especially painfull to see some of the active members leave the club for professional or other different reasons.
The further development
In 1996 we had a tailor from scottland come to meet with us, who's measuring tape determined the needed sizes of the active members for new jackets and kilts, since the old ones had gone even older and needed to be replaced. Parallel to that, there was also a change towards professionalism. As well in playing skills as in appearance. Pipers and drummers attended special courses and workshops. Bert Anhalt, a german class-a- drummer took care of the development of our drummers. Stefan Bender, one of the best geman pipers was our trainer for a couple of weekend workshops. He brought our technical skills in the right direction. A few times we had George Stewert of Scottland (see pic right below) , one of the worldbest pipers, as our guest. During his stay of a couple of weeks, he was able to build up on Stefans work and teach the band further skills. His motto was, we have to develop a proffessional attitude and cultivate it. With him as a Pipe Major he band had the pleasure to have some appearances under his command. Now the necessary playing requirements where met to follow his quote.
The next goal was the improvement of the presentation of the band during appearances. For that a few band members visited the yearly repeated one week workshops with competition at the Summerschool of Piping at Breuberg Castle in the Odenwald in Germany. The organizer is the BAG (Bagpipe Association of Germany), our head association. First class trainers take care of musical development of drummers and pipers.  Also important contacts can be made and cultivated. Expiriences are exchanged and the collective play has its place..
